Night and the city

This is a classic noir film, film in London in 1949, the head of production of Twentieth Century-Fox. The film starts with Harry Fabian played as Richard Widmark. He is a ambitious American hustler  and a second-rate con man in London . He has a girlfriend called Mary Bristol played as Gene Tierney, after putting up with Harry asking to borrow money all the time she became fed up with it. Harry then started his own business and worked with an age Greek wrestler as partners, until he dies and everyone is blaming it on Harry.  
After that Harry soon learns the horrible price of his ambitions. 

Harry is reckless, quick-witted, wild, and insatiably greedy- and throughout Night and the city, he goes morally as well as financially bankrupt. Harry’s lust for wealth and power has no limits, and in true anti-hero fashion he destroys his relationship with his fiancé Mary. At one point he even pawns her engagement ring. It seems that his character believes that redemption can only be bought by wealth and success, and not by love and forgiveness.

Film Noir, the style of filmmaking characterized by such elements as cynical heroes, stark lighting effects , frequent use of flashbacks, intricate plots. The genre was prevalent mostly in American crime dramas of the post World War ll. era. It is said that the themes of noir attracted European directors, who often felt like outsiders within the Hollywood studio system. Such directors had been trained to emphasize cinematic style as much as acting and narrative in order to convey thought and emotion.
